Cypress Ships 200 Millionth Lead-Free and RoHS-Compliant Device

Milestone Demonstrates Cypress's Commitment to
Lead-Free Package Implementation

SAN JOSE, Calif., 2005년 10월 19일 - Cypress Semiconductor Corp. (NYSE: CY) has shipped more than 200 million lead-free components that comply with the European Union's directive on the Restriction on the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS).

Cypress continues to see consistent increased demand for RoHS-compliant, high-quality, nickel-palladium-gold (NiPdAu) packaging.  NiPdAu is used instead of a combination of tin and lead (SnPb) that has been widely used in semiconductor packaging. NiPdAu is accepted by the semiconductor market, maintains excellent performance and reliability, and is compatible with existing SnPb assembly processes.

"This is an important milestone in the Cypress roadmap to 100 percent lead-free products and demonstrates our total commitment to provide leadership in lead-free and RoHS-compliant packaging," said Bob Blazer, vice president of assembly and test operations at Cypress. "Cypress continues to work closely with our supply chain partners to develop and implement effective solutions that eliminate lead content and achieve RoHS compliance without compromising quality, performance and reliability."

Cypress has been shipping lead-free components since 2003 and is now offering lead-free packaging for all new integrated circuit (IC) products with the exception of flip chip products. Cypress is also working closely with customers developing and qualifying their own lead-free processes and products while continuing to ship standard (non-lead-free) components to customers whose lead-free processes and products are still under development.

Cypress's Lead-Free Initiative
The use of lead and other hazardous materials including mercury, hexavalent chromium, cadmium, poly-brominated biphenyl and poly-brominated diphenyl ether flame-retardants in electronic products is an increasingly visible and challenging environmental concern. Legislation and supply chain programs are being institutionalized globally to facilitate the removal of these materials from electronic products.  In cooperation with our technology and supply chain partners, Cypress developed and implemented a process that meets the requirements and stringent timelines of OEM initiatives and legislative actions, including RoHS. Cypress underscores it commitment to environmentally responsible standards and practices through its ISO 14001 certification, and is committed to the prevention of pollution and the continual improvement of its environmental systems and controls.
